EXPERIMENTING WITH MORE FIBER ON GOURDS

Just a couple of quick photos of some of Nancy's latest efforts. She has been experimenting with yarns and other fibers on gourds. This one measures 9 1/2" tall by 12 " wide.

Just in Time for Nesting

Nesting season is just around the corner, and we here at Wet Dog Studios have added a variety of birdhouses to our etsy site. These are sized for Wrens and other cavity nesters, and we have even had Bluebirds living in them here at the shop.
Excellent gifts for housewarmings, for birthdays, for Mother's Day, or just because, we hope you take a moment and have a look at some of our offerings. That's wetdogstudios.etsy.com. Thanks!

All for the Birds!

While we do many things to and with gourds, birdhouses are probably are most popular items. A great gift for those impossible to shop for, we like to add our own twists to them. The birds only care about the size of the openings, all of the embellishments are purely for our own enjoyment.
The most frequent question we get about them is if birds really use them. Here in Pennsylvania, competition among cavity nesters is pretty fierce. Our houses are sized for wrens and similar sized birds, and we have even had Bluebirds living in them here at the shop.
We water proof ours with paste shoe polish. That way, the owner can re-coat the house yearly and extend the useful life of the gourd. We also believe it is more environmentally friendly.
We've added some photos below for you to peruse, showing some of our work. The carved ones are done using a wood gouge, and the "Tie-Dyed" ones are a fanciful harkening to our hippie days!

Brand New Year

Hi everyone! 2012 is finally behind us, and we are well into '13. What a season we had last year. Every festival we did save one was subjected to the worst weather in memory. That didn't stop everybody from coming out, but it sure made for some long, chilly, wet days!

On the home front, we adopted a 2 year old German Shepherd dog named Buddy. What a handful, but he has managed to adapt and win our hearts completely. Also, we have taken on a flock of Guinea Hens. Did I say flock? Guineas are more like a gang. Fascinating birds. The side benefit is they eat ticks and just about everything else that crawls or flies.

We made several presentations to Garden Clubs locally, and taught quite a few classes last year. We were very fortunate to be invited to the Virginia Gourd Festival to teach. It was a wonderful time, and the folks there are just the best. If you are interested, check out their site, Virginia Lover's Gourd Society.

We are already scheduling for 2013. If accepted, we will be doing some interesting shows. We will keep you posted as the year goes on and we find out for sure which ones we've been accepted at.

We've added some photos from the past year for you to peek at. More to come!

We'd love to hear from you. Sorry it has been so long since we've posted, and we promise to be more timely in keepong you all in the loop!
